THIS CAR

Nearly six decades after its landmark spring 1957 debut at Geneva, the Mercedes- Benz 300 SL Roadster continues to rank along with the Gullwing coupe before it among the finest and most influential sports cars ever conceived. Capable of truly electrifying performance, the 300 SL Roadster is further defined by such virtues as its legendary Mercedes-Benz construction quality and robust engineering, which match the purposeful beauty of its sensuous body lines. Its technical sophistication including its SOHC, direct fuel-injected three-liter engine was unsurpassed until many years after the last example rolled of the line in 1963. The 300 SL Roadster also marks the end of an era as the final Mercedes-Benz constructed with a separate body and frame. Largely based on the W198 Gullwing itself derived from the W194 300 SL racing car of the early 1950s the 300 SL Roadster was internally designated W198 II and heralded myriad updates while maintaining the sleek design cues and race-bred performance credentials of the Gullwing. Carefully refined from its incredibly lightweight yet strong tubular space frame, featuring lower sills allowing for conventional side-opening doors, the 300 SL Roadster was at once easier to enter and exit, and arguably more comfortable than its forebear. Handling was improved and made more predictable with a switch to somewhat softer spring rates. Most notably, the addition of a rear-compensating spring tamed the oversteering tendencies of the coupes sporting, yet sometimes tricky, rear swing-arm suspension. The 300 SL Roadster did gain some 200 lbs., mostly a consequence of the new convertible top, its associated mechanisms, and additional structural bracing. However, a compression increase infused the three-liter straight six with 250 hp, offsetting the weight penalty. The snug-fitting convertible top retracted fully beneath a neat metal panel into a well behind the seats, enhancing the basic roadsters sleek body lines. As buyers expected, the 300 SL Roadster was an outstanding performer with strong acceleration and a factory-claimed 137 mph top speed, depending upon the final-drive ratio selected. Predictably, the 300 SL Roadster proved quite popular among members of the eras entertainment, political, and social elite, including Elvis Presley and screen legends Clark Gable and Glenn Ford. Both luxurious and high-powered, 300 SL was the vehicular embodiment of the energy and promise of the late 1950s and 1960s. According to a copy of its original Daimler-Benz Lieferschein (Delivery Notice), this original US-specification 300 SL Roadster is one of the 554 examples produced for 1957 and was originally finished in the rare Erdbeerrot or Strawberry Red Metallic (DB 543) paint. Other factory-original equipment included English instruments, sealed-beam headlamps with separate parking lamps, a Becker Mexico radio unit, and a 3.89:1 rear-axle ratio. While little is known of its early history, the 300 SL was eventually sold to Japan, where it is reported to have spent a number of years until it returned to the US in August 2005, as a solid overall example that had already received some restorative work earlier in its lifetime. As offered, this 300 SL clearly benefits from the exacting two-year restoration performed by marque experts at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA in Irvine, California, completed in mid-2014. The work included a restoration of the mechanical systems, including a complete rebuild of the engine and transmission, plus attention to the steering, suspension, and rear-axle assemblies. The body was refinished in its original color, complemented by all new tan leather upholstery, carpeting, and a brown soft top all installed by Jon Cumpton. Stunningly presented with color-matched Rudge-type wheels, books, tools, and two-piece fitted luggage set, as well as desirable European-specification headlamps, this first-year 300 SL Roadster is extremely rare as one of about 30 examples originally finished in Strawberry Red Metallic (DB 543). As such, it simply ticks all the boxes for an early-production 300 SL Roadster. Best of all, with its race-bred DNA and prodigious capabilities, this iconic Mercedes-Benz will certainly provide a thrilling experience with every drive, whether on the scenic Colorado Grand or a beautiful coastal highway.

THIS CAR

The development of the road-going 300 SL dates to 1951 with the construction of the revolutionary, lightweight W194 series, intended solely for racing. These Mercedes-Benz achieved numerous victories and podium finishes as works entries at such grueling races as the Mille Miglia, the Carrera Panamericana, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking Mercedes-Benzs return to racing in the postwar era with globally recognized, high-profile wins. An upmarket passenger car based on these exotic and successful racers was developed and aimed squarely at US buyers with the goal of using this success in competition to raise the profile of the entire Mercedes-Benz product line in the States. Never in the history of Mercedes-Benz was a new model debuted outside of Europe. The presentation of the 300 SL Gullwing at the New York International Motor Sports Show in 1954 was, like the car itself, unprecedented. Sales success in the US for the race-bred 300 SL was absolutely crucial to both Mercedes-Benz as well as importer Max Hofman, who had made a 1,000-unit sales commitment to the company, which green lit the project. Using his influence, Hoffman arranged for his friend, noted racer Briggs Cunningham, to receive a Gullwing as early as possible so he could compete with it at popular racing venues and reinforce the Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday adage.According to factory records, 4500003 was one of a pair of 300 SLs invoiced from Sindelfingen on August 23, 1954, making them the first production 300 SL Gullwings to leave the factory, weeks ahead of the next completed cars. Finished in German Racing Silver (DB 180) with a blue plaid cloth interior, Cunninghams Gullwing had the look of a postwar Silver Arrow. Just three days after Cunningham took delivery, the Gullwing made its debut at Watkins Glen. True to his mission, Hofman had arranged time on the circuit for Cunningham to test the car and demonstrate it for the spectators. Cunningham, a true racer at heart, asked that two significant changes be made to his 300 SL. He found the original dogleg shift lever unwieldy, and 4500003 became the first production Gullwing to be fitted with the straight shift lever, which was standard on chassis 4500051 and onward. Also, Cunningham felt that the Gullwings breakaway steering wheel could pose a safety hazard while racing and had a solid steering wheel hub installed in its place. In February 1955, Briggs was joined by his good friend Phil Hill at Daytonas NASCAR Speed Week. During the event, the Gullwing experienced an engine failure. Mercedes-Benz immediately dispatched an engine, which replaced the original, five-month-old engine, no. 00007, with the engine that the car has kept ever since, no. 00019. In mid-1955, with the 300 SL having been successfully launched and with a backlog of orders at the factory Briggs Cunningham sold his Gullwing to SCCA official and fellow racer Bill Fleming. It is evident that Fleming entered the car in numerous events and is known to have won his class with the car at the Mt. Equinox Hillclimb in Arlington, Vermont, in June 1956. He is pictured at the event in the September issue of Road & Track. By 1959, Fleming sold the Gullwing to aerospace parts manufacturer Victor Stein of San Carlos, California, who maintained ownership until February 1972. A handwritten letter in February of that year from Stein to the 300 SLs next owner, James Hein, marks the pending transaction, mentioning a $16 per day rate for the rental of a car trailer from a local yard. According to Mr. Hein, 4500003 was instead treated to a TWA air shipment between California and New York. A 300 SL enthusiast and historian from the early days, Mr. Hein drove the Gullwing for a number of years and then dutifully kept 4500003 in dry storage, taking note of its many fascinating details. Over the decades, the car was partially disassembled in preparation for a restoration that never commenced. Its years of storage held the coupe in a state of preservation until it was finally sold to the consignor in 2013. This most special Gullwing was immediately sent to renowned 300 SL authority Hans Kleissls HK-Engineering for a thorough restoration. Only when 4500003 was fully disassembled and catalogued by the restorers at HK did the entire scope of the cars importance fully come to light. It appears that 4500003 may have been hand built as a late pre-production car that was not initially intended for sale but was renumbered by the factory and prepared for the earliest possible shipment in order to fulfill Mr. Cunninghams commitment to run the car on popular American racetracks. There are numerous physical differences present on 4500003 that are not found on even the earliest production examples. For instance, the central headliner panel has a unique design and the adjacent overhead door hinges are hewn from rough steel instead of the standard finished aluminum. The side panels of the upholstery just inside the door sills finish out about 10 mm higher than standard cars. The radiator and coolant overflow tank appear to be hand formed and have different shapes compared with production parts. The overall length of the body is shorter than a standard Gullwing by a significant amount, an astonishing 55 mm. It has been said that each of 4500003s panels is subtly different from those of the production cars. Interestingly, the castings of the front wheel-hub carriers bear serial no. 4500001 and no. 4500002. Hundreds of hours have been spent by HK-Engineering and 300 SL authorities not only to return this irreplaceable Gullwing to its original glory, but also to document the myriad subtle differences between 4500003 and the Gullwings built on the assembly line. 4500003 has not been seen in public for almost 40 years and is now available for public sale for the first time since it was built. Its importance to the success of the 300 SL project, its descendants still topping the Mercedes-Benz product line today, cannot be overstated. Included with the car is the original service book, as well as a very early typewritten copy of the operating manual; both books bear the original B.S. Cunningham signature. Many of the service coupons have been removed, tracing the car from its earliest days, until it had covered over 30,000 miles. One of the most important sports cars of all time, 4500003 is singularly unique and is truly deserving of the oft-overused term icon.

THIS CAR

An elite road car, the 300 SL was the street version of the powerful and impressive Mercedes-Benz competition car that won the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans. When Mercedes-Benz introduced the sleek 300 SL Gullwing Coupe in 1954, it captured the attention of the automotive world. This impact was repeated in 1957, when the company debuted the striking and versatile 300 SL Roadster. Between 1957 and 1963, 1,858 roadsters were built, each a showcase of Mercedes-Benzs exceptional engineering, styling, and build quality. Throughout production, numerous improvements were made including, most notably, the addition of four-wheel disc brakes beginning with chassis no. 2780, and aluminum engine blocks beginning with chassis no. 3049. The disc brakes dramatically reduce the roadsters unsprung weight. Those with experience driving both drum- and disc-brake cars have noted that disc brake-equipped roadsters are more nimble. Furthermore, approximately 50 lbs. of weight over the front axle was saved through the use of the alloy-block engine, further improving steering and handling response, and providing for a more even front/rear weight distribution. The final 210 300 SL Roadsters, now commonly referred to as the disc-brake, alloy-block cars are, for good reason, the most coveted of the line, and have the distinction of being the last hand-built, body-on-frame Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster presented here has enjoyed nearly a quarter century in the hands of a respected collector of the worlds finest sports and racing cars. Like every car in the collection, the roadster has always been treated with expert care and the utmost respect. Restored prior to his ownership, this 300 SL has been regularly exercised and maintained by the team at Puyallup, Washingtons esteemed Dennison International and has been kept in a perpetual state of fine tune and detail. The exterior shows beautifully in bright red, representing a lively change from its White-Gray (DB 158) as was originally delivered with superb brightwork and polished aluminum outer-wheel rims. A renewed tan canvas soft top stows neatly beneath the cover, and, perhaps the most valuable roadster option, a factory hardtop that is unrestored, which is included as well. A pair of Bosch European headlights rounds out its outstanding presentation. The inviting tan leather interior shows just the right amount of patina yet still appears tidy and correct, and color-matched seat belts have been added for safety while on tour. The engine compartment is very well detailed, showing only the lightest signs of use with clean satin black finishes, proper decals and fasteners, and a polished intake manifold.As 300 SL Roadsters continue to grow in popularity as the near-perfect touring cars that they are, many top collectors are looking for that one special roadster among the few available each year. This disc-brake, alloy-block roadster one of the last 100 built is certainly a standout among this elite group. Having spent nearly a quarter century professionally kept in top form in the hands of a knowledgeable collector, complete with hardtop, books, tools, and eligible for a host of different events, this is quite possibly the ideal example of one of the most universally admired postwar sports cars of all time. By all accounts this is an opportunity to be seized.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SL - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - *Please note, the registration number shown in the photos is not supplied with the car* Mercedes-Benz have been producing SL models or range of models since 1954. The similarly styled but mechanically unrelated 190 followed in 1955 completing the first generation of cars. The second generation SL's began with the 230 in 1963 and was distinguished by its lower waistline, big curved screens and a distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of `pagoda top'. Over its seventeen year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines - two sizes of straight-six unit and six versions of V8's. This delightful Mercedes-Benz has had three keepers, although the registration document shows more, as the car was purchased by the vendor from their company. Having enjoyed D440 OET for the last 22 years, very reluctantly, this 300SL is seeking a new owner. The original literature pack is supplied with 19 stamps in the service book which confirms the mileage of 56,928 to be correct. Clearly the fastidious owner has spent many hours looking after this handsome roadster and the car presents in excellent condition throughout. R107 Mercedes have been commanding higher values of late and this exceptional example is a genuine drive away classic that should want for very little over the coming years. 1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SL - Auction - Weybridge, SURREY - Mercedes-Benz have been producing an SL (Sport Leicht) model or range of models since 1954. The similarly styled but mechanically unrelated 190 followed in 1955, completing the first generation of cars. The second generation SL's began with the 230 in 1963. It was distinguished by its lower waistline, big curved screens and a distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of `pagoda top'. Over its nine years of production, the second generation SL's engine grew in capacity from 2.3 litre (230SL) to 2.5 litre (250SL) and finally to a 2.8 litre (280SL). The larger, third generation SL was launched in 1971, initially with just a 3.5-litre engine (350SL) mated to four-speed automatic transmission. The car featured a two-door monocoque body shell with independent suspension all round, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the front, semi-trailing arms, coil springs and anti-roll bar at the rear. The power assisted steering was Daimler-Benz's own re-circulating ball system.  Over its seventeen year reign, the R107 range was powered by no less than eight different engines - two sizes of straight-six unit and six versions of 90-degree V8 including the three litre straight six we have offered here produced from 1985. Finished in limited edition Moss green with cream mushroom half leather with check fabric inserts and complete with original black convertible hood and factory hard top, this three owner car is truly a beautiful example and one of the best we have seen. The previous vendor has owned this roadster for a period of some 30+ years, where we are informed it was treated like one of the family, offering a full service history and only 57,000 miles covered. This original, low mileage car offering the original Blaupunkt radio cassette, original tool kit, manuals and 2 keys, including a chauffeur key is also offered with V5 Registration document, valid MoT Road test certificate until July 2015 and valid Road fund licence until August 2014.  We are told it will have a fluid change service completed for the sale so it is ready to drive away and revel in the remainder of the summer, in what is a fast appreciating classic.

The 300SL Gullwing

Max Hoffman rarely missed an opportunity. The impresario of imported cars on New York's Park Avenue built the U.S. presence of most European brands after World War II – Jaguar, Allard, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Mercedes-Benz and more – and when Mercedes-Benz won the Carrera Panamericana in 1952 with a W194 300SL coupe driven by Karl Kling, Hoffman seized the moment.

He pproached Mercedes with a radical idea: take the charismatic tube frame W194, with its high performance 3-liter engine and characteristic roof-hinged doors, and create a road car based on it. It was audacious, but Hoffman had a highly developed sense for the U.S. market and backed up his suggestion with his checkbook. He placed an order for a thousand luxury high performance coupes based on a more civilized version of the W194.

Mercedes-Benz, still valiantly trying to shake off the devastation of the war and the weak European market, took him up on it and the 300SL was born.

Hoffman had proposed a relatively direct transformation of the multi-tube framed W194, retaining its roof-hinged doors, tall, wide sills, 45° canted triple-carbureted single overhead camshaft inline six and fully independent suspension with more civilized accoutrements. The engineers at Mercedes-Benz weren't satisfied with such a simple transformation and added the first direct mechanical fuel injection system ever offered in a production automobile. Introduced at the February 1954 New York Auto Show, the 300SL was an instant sensation.

Its curved doors soon brought it the nickname "Gullwing" which has stuck for well over half a century and been copied by many lesser automobiles hoping to capitalize on the 300SL's halo. The body design was refined for the street and added eyebrow moldings over the wheel wells to signal an association with Mercedes-Benz's later race cars. The driving position, steering wheel location, controls and instruments' visibility were carefully refined by M-B to make driving the 300SL a rewarding experience.

Over the next three years Mercedes-Benz built over 1,400 300SL Gullwings. The majority were sold through Max Hoffman in North America, validating both the reality of his vision and returning many times over the confidence he showed in backing its development.

Ever since 1954, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing has been one of the seminal cars every collector must own or experience.

This is one of only 855 300SL Gullwings completed in 1955 and one of only a very few that were not destined for the USA / North American market. It is sequentially the 354th of the 855 built and according to Mercedes Benz Factory Records, it was complete under a "Special Order" on June 7th, 1955. The original order for this particular Gullwing was executed on "Kommission" number 755 369 on behalf of the favored official North African Mercedes Distributor, Mercedes Benz Sales & Distribution F.W. Weckerle Casablanca, Morocco. This was the 2nd Gullwing Weckerle ordered and took delivery of this year. Earlier that Spring he had commissioned, completed and took delivery of the 13th of only 29 "alloy bodied" 300SL Gullwings.  (Coincidently one that our company also purchased and sold last year.)

Because this 300SL is a pure "European" version and not destined for the North American Market, it features differnt front headlights and trim rings rather than the USA type Sealed Beam units. Even more attractive are the competition inspired, "pencil-thin" bumpers front and rear that do not have the ugly USA-type over-riders. The gauges are also calibrated in metric units and the speedometer goes to 270kph rather than 180mph.

Upon acceptance of the order for this 300SL, Mercedes Benz assigned and stamped the following unique identity numbers into the individual sub assemblies that would comprise this vehicle:

Chassis No. 300SL/198.040-5500376
Engine No. 198.980-5500409
Body No. A 198.040-5500363

(All of the above noted original date coded and numbered components remain with this vehicle today, ie; "Matching Numbers.")

The original order for this 300SL specified the exterior color to be DB 50G Cream/Ivory (white) with 1079 Red Leather as well as a separate 1097 white leather interior. (Given the ultra warm climate of Moracco, a white/white car, while very monochromatic in nature, might not have been a bad choice. In any case, a full and complete restoration of this Gullwing was completed in Germany a few years ago and at great care and expense the original exterior color was changed to DB40 black with a contrasting all grey leather intior and matching luggage fitted in place.

The subassemblies, (engine, gearbox, axles, steering box, wheels, gauges etc... that would be used in the construction of this particular 300SL were all assembled in the Spring of 1955 with the final items being completed the first week of June, 1955.

This Mercedes is fitted with the following options:

-Special Order / Shipping / Delivery
-Becker Radio
-Amplifier with Loud Speakers
-Hirschmann Automatic Power Antenna
-Matching Fitted Luggage from KARL BAISCH Autokofferfabrik Stuttgart, Germany
-Extra Sets of Keys
-Rudge Wheels
-Special Packing for Shipping to Casablanca, Morocco

Delivery of this Mercedes to Mercedes Benz Sales & Distribution F.W. Weckerle Casablanca, Morocco was initiated on June 13th, 1955.

300SL/198.040-5500376 Today:
Just over a decade ago, this particular 300SL Gullwing was acquired by the world-reknown collector, Frederick Loh. It was at that time a remarkably original and sound "survivor" quality example. Loh had the vehicle shipped to the German Mercedes Benz specialist firm:

Jürgen Kassen
Rudolf-Diesel-Str. 3
33813 Oerlinghausen
Germany

Kassen's shop is located in the North Easter part of Germany equidistant from Essen and Hamurg. They are noted for the quality and care of their service and restoration work on the world's finest automoibes. Over the next several years this 300SL was completley and meticulously dissassembled and completely restored without concern for time or money. The restoration records and bills details clearly that nearly $300,000 was spent during the restoration.

In May of 2005, Loh accepted an offer from the Japanese private museum collector, Hiroshi Sugimoto of Suginamiku, Tokyo, Japan.  The car was formally exported from Germany and imported to Japan and road registered on plates "337 300" and then placed on display in his museum collection. In his short term as custodian and since the completion of the restoration, this Gullwing has covered only 660 kilometers of ultra-careful and gentle use prior to our purchase earlier this month.

Please email or call me if I can assist further in anyway with the potential purchase of this very special Gullwing.

History…

  • Shipped on June 11, 1956 from Mercedes Benz factory directly to Mexico via official dealer Delta Mexico;
  • The Mercedes Benz Registry/Factory records show only one White/Red 300 SL Gullwing (this cars original colors) being imported to Mexico;
  • Photos taken in 1956 show world famous Mexican actor Pedro Infante at the wheel of the car in period;
  • Optioned with Becker-Mexico radio, and standard wheels;
  • This Gullwing had three Mexican owners (documented by Mercedes Benz) until it was purchased by another well-known Mexican collector (also documented) in 1986.At this time, the Gullwing was sent to California to be restored by Sebastian Dominguez, who has claimed several Pebble Beach Best of Show wins;
  • In 1989, the Gullwing returned to Mexico after the completion of its restoration and was exhibited in on several occasions/events until 2011;
  • In 2012, this Gullwing was purchased by its current owner and entrusted to Mexican restorer Fernando Gomez Urquiza.At this time it was desided by its new owner to change the color combination to its current and incredibly attractive combination of Anthracite Grey Metallic (DB172) with Cream (1060).Mr. Urquiza is well known as the caretaker of many, if not all of the 300 SL’s and who has been awarded Best of Show at various Gullwing Group conventions which are quite demanding, competing against only the best 300 SL’s.His work can bee seen at www.mercedes300sl.com
  • 2012-2013: The Gullwing has been subject to a complete refreshing which has included Complete paint, Interior, Engine and Mechanical overhaul to world class standards.Every single detail has been taken care of to make this Gullwing as close to perfect as possible;
  • When completed, it was shown on April 12, 2013 at Mexico’s most prestigious classic car event the Concurso de la Elegancia, well known for the high quality concours cars being judged.This 300 SL Gullwing was awarded Best of Show, even though the previous years Best of Show winner had also been a 300SL.  The judges believed it was so perfect they had to give the award for the second year in a row to a Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing;

This is a rare opportunity to own one of the most exceptional 300 SL Gullwings in the world and one that has complete ownership history from new, one that has only accumulated 14,000 kilometers (8,000 miles) on its clock/odometer and therefore will feel like it has only just been broken in, one that has all of its original equipment, books, tools, luggage from new.  Simply put, this is an opportunity to purchase a 300 SL Gullwing in superb concours condition with an unblemished ownership and service history that is sure to have exceptional investment potential, unless of course you can find another :) !
